The 2016 presidential election is not too far away and one topic in particular is expected to generate significant attention during the race. That topic is marijuana. The marijuana industry has made significant strides over the last two years and this trend is expected to continue for years to come.
Recreational marijuana is now legal in the nation’s backyard, which has made it tougher for Congress to ignore. However, recent statistics released by the Pew Research Center may force Congress to not only back off marijuana, but accept it.
Republican millennials want marijuana to be legal
The poll, conducted by the Pew Research Center, found that 63% of Republican millennials feel that the use of marijuana should be legal. Support among Democratic millennials was even higher, at 77%. The millennial age group is the only age group of Republicans that favor legal marijuana, while every Democratic age group favored its legalization.
Alaska became the first red state to legalize marijuana in November, and it won’t be the last. The way public opinion is trending, it looks to be only a matter of time before a majority of Republicans born in the last 50 years are pro-legalization.
D.C police chief supports the legalization of marijuana
Cathy Lanier, the police chief of the District of Columbia, stood by Mayor Muriel Bowser as members of Congress threatened jail time to Bowser and others if they implemented the voter-approved marijuana legalization. Lanier said that alcohol is a much bigger problem than marijuana.
“Marijuana smokers are not going to attack and kill a cop,” Lanier said while speaking at the American News Women’s Club, per The Daily Beast. “They just want to get a bag of chips and relax. Alcohol is a much bigger problem.”
