10 Facts You Never Knew About Medical Marijuana

1. Sativex was the first medicine available to patients that was 100% derived from the Cannabis plant. GW Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: GWPH) is responsible for developing Sativex, an oral spray that first came out in June 2010. Patients would treat muscle tightness caused by Multiple Sclerosis by spraying Sativex into their mouth.
2. Researchers at UCLA conducted a study and found no correlation between lung cancer and the use of marijuana. The researchers also concluded that marijuana might even have a “protective effect” against lung cancer.
3. Smoking marijuana produces the “high sensation” much faster than through consumption of marijuana.
4. The Federal Government labels marijuana as a Schedule 1 Drug. Other drugs classified as Schedule 1 include Heroin, Acid, and Ecstasy. Cocaine, Meth, and Oxycontin (Oxycodon HCI) are all classified as a Schedule 2 drug, and are deemed less abusive than marijuana under current law.

9. Marinol was the first marijuana-based medication to be approved by the FDA. Marinol contains a synthetic form of THC, but it is not considered to be derived from cannabis.
10. California was the first state to legalize medical marijuana in 1996. Currently, 23 states, and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana.
