New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is at it again. On Sunday, Christie said if he was president he would enforce federal drug laws in states that have legalized and regulated cannabis. Christie said he would crack down and not permit it.
These comments were made during CBS’ “Face the Nation” program. During the program, John Dickerson asked Christie if he would return the federal prosecutions in the states of Colorado, Washington states.
Christie said, “Yes. I think there’s probably a lot of people in Colorado who are not too thrilled with what’s going on there right now. You know the way you win any state? You go out and you tell people the truth and you lay out your ideas. And you either win or you lose. But I don’t believe that people just want to be told what they want to hear. I believe they want to be told the truth as the person who’s running sees it.”
Marijuana to be on the ballot in critical swing states
Marijuana legality remains a potent issue in key electoral states, which guarantees that the candidates will be drawn into the debate. The presence of a marijuana initiative on any state ballot will also result in a significant increase in voter turnout. Currently, 36 states have legalized some form of marijuana and researchers expect recreational marijuana to be on the ballot in at least 5 states in 2016.
Colorado, Florida and a number of other critical swing states will have marijuana on the ballot in 2016. If a candidate’s campaign involves cracking down on marijuana, they are most likely not going to win the popular vote of many swing states which are crucial to winning the election.
Christie said he will decide whether to seek the Republican presidential nomination this month.
Marijuana tax revenue is blood money?
A few months ago, Governor Christie said the tax revenue generated from marijuana is blood money. Christie, however, spent $82,594 of taxpayers’ money at the concession stands in MetLife Stadium during the 2010 and 2011 football seasons
Christie said. “To me, that’s blood money. I’m not going to put the lives of children and citizens at risk to put a little more money into the state coffers, at least not on my watch.”
Outlook
Governor Chris Christie is clearly not the sharpest crayon in the box and we can only hope that his reign as Governor of New Jersey ends sooner than later. Marijuana activists need to rally against leaders like Christie because he is out of touch with the American people and their needs. Change will only come with action and we need to elect smarter policy makers who will enact smarter policies.
Christie is the epitome of what is wrong with our leaders today, and as President Obama once said, it is time for a change.
