The Pew Research Center recently conducted a survey that showed that a majority of Americans support marijuana legalization. According to the survey, 53% of Americans support legal marijuana, a slight decrease from the 54% found in a similar poll last year
The survey found that millennials are far more supportive than any other voter demographic group. 68% of those in the 18-34 age range support legalization, 16% higher than the next most supportive demographic, those that fall into the 35-50 age range. An earlier Pew survey showed that the millennial demographic is significantly more supportive across party lines.
The survey found that 59% of democrats and 58% of independents support marijuana legalization. Only 39% of republicans said that they are in favor of marijuana legalization. This is actually the highest it has ever been for the GOP.
Quinnipiac University’s poll shows strong support for legal marijuana
In a recent article, Technical420 cited the results from a poll recently conducted by Quinnipiac University. The poll showed that the public strongly supports legal marijuana and even more so medical marijuana. Here are some of the highlights of their findings:
The poll reported that 55% of Florida voters, 52% of Ohio voters, and 51% of Pennsylvania voters favored recreational marijuana.
The poll reported that 84% of voters in Florida and Ohio, and 88% of voters in Pennsylvania supported medical marijuana.
Yesterday, Quinnipiac released similar results from a survey in Virginia and Iowa. Where, voters overwhelmingly supported legal medical marijuana.
The poll reported that 86% of Virginia voters and 87% of Iowa voters support medical marijuana.
The poll reported that 54% of Virginia voters and 47% of Iowa voters favor recreational marijuana.
The millennial demographic led the way in Virginia and Iowa. They showed strong support for the legalization of recreational marijuana. 75% and 72% of voters in Virginia and Iowa between the ages of 18 and 34 voted in favor of legalizing recreational marijuana. The poll found that large majorities of voters in multiple demographics favor some form of marijuana legalization at the state level.
Finding common ground
The majority of voters have been able to find a common ground on one topic in particular and that is that they do not want the federal government to interfere with states that have legalized it. That’s what 64% of Independents, 58% of Democrats and 54% of Republicans told Pew researchers.

The poll broke down its findings into a number of a categories: overall, gender, generation, and party
