Although Donald Trump was the highlight of last night’s GOP debate, marijuana finally became a topic of discussion. The candidates were asked how they would handle marijuana legalization and Senator Rand Paul came out in favor of it.
Senator Paul also said one of the candidates (Jeb Bush) on stage was a hypocrite because the candidate had used marijuana in the past, but opposed legalization efforts now. After Paul’s comments, Jeb Bush apologized to his mom
Bush said, “So 40 years ago, I smoked marijuana…. [Others] may not want to say it in front of 25 million people. My mom is not happy that I just did.”
Where do the other candidates stand?
Marco Rubio: Many people believe that Marco Rubio would be in favor of allowing states to make their own decisions regarding marijuana. Rubio, however, has also said that his own family was hurt by the drug business when his brother-in-law was arrested and sent to prison. Rubio said that there is no responsible way to use marijuana (recreationally) and he thinks that legalization would be bad for the country.
Scott Walker: Walker told CNN, “From my standpoint, I still have concerns about making it legal. I understand from the libertarian standpoint, the argument out there. I still have concerns.” Walker added, “I’m not, unlike the President, I still have difficulty visualizing marijuana and alcohol in the same vein.”
Ted Cruz: Cruz has stated that he think states should be able to make their own laws, but he has never been a marijuana supporter.
Chris Christie: Governor Christie said the tax revenue generated from marijuana is blood money. He recently said that if you’re getting high in Colorado today; enjoy it, because he will enforce the federal laws against marijuana as president of the United States.
