On Sunday, CNN will air a television special, called “Weed 3,” which will feature President Barack Obama and CNN’s chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta.
During the program, President Obama will announce his full support for medical marijuana and he will advocate for alternative models of drug abuse treatment which do not involve incarceration.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta is a world renowned neurosurgeon who used to be strongly against medical marijuana. His opinion changed when he met Charlotte Figi, a young girl who suffered from a severe case of Dravet’s syndrome. By age 3, she was having 300 seizures a week. Medical marijuana calmed her brain, and limited her seizures to 2 or 3 per month.
Dr. Gupta said, “It’s been eight months since I last wrote about medical marijuana, apologizing for having not dug deeply into the beneficial effects of this plant and for writing articles dismissing its potential. I apologized for my own role in previously misleading people, and I feel very badly that people have suffered for too long, unable to obtain the legitimate medicine that may have helped them.”
He added, “We have been terribly and systematically misled for nearly 70 years in the United States, and I apologize for my own role in that.”
What will they discuss?
During the special, Dr. Gupta will discuss the politics of medical marijuana research and he will interview President Obama. The two briefly discussed the bipartisan bill that was recently submitted to the Senate. The bill contains a provision that reschedules marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule II substance. Dr. Gupta wanted to know if Obama supports the bill.
“You know, I think I’d have to take a look at the details, but I’m on record as saying that not only do I think carefully prescribed medical use of marijuana may in fact be appropriate and we should follow the science as opposed to ideology on this issue, but I’m also on record as saying that the more we treat some of these issues related to drug abuse from a public health model and not just from an incarceration model, the better off we’re going to be,” Obama responded.
Obama cited the declining usage rates of tobacco in the United States as an instance of how effective public health models can be if taken seriously.
What to expect
This special will bring together two well respected individuals whose opinions are highly regarded. Dr. Gupta was considered to be the leading candidate for U.S General Surgeon position, however, he respectfully declined that opportunity. President Obama is the leader of the free world and he has the power to enact change, if so chooses to do so.
We are excited to see what announcements or developments come out of this interview and we are glad to see that the president plans on announcing his full support for medical marijuana.
