Germany is quickly evolving into a large medical cannabis market and we have been closely following this opportunity for several years.
In the first half of 2021, the country imported almost 9,000 kilograms of medical cannabis. While this number is not large when compared to North America, it shows strong growth on a year-over-year basis and we find this to be of significance.
Although it took time for Germany’s medical cannabis market to advance, we believe the market is starting to record strong growth and this is a trend that we are bullish on. We recently came across a chart that showed which countries are exporting medical cannabis to Germany and wanted to provide more information on this topic.
While Canada is exporting the most amount of cannabis to Germany and accounted for 32% of the cannabis that was imported in the first half of the year, the Netherlands and Portugal are capturing market share and account for 35% of the cannabis that was imported in the first half of the year.
Over the next year, we expect this trend to become more significant as several large scale Canadian Licensed Producers (LPs) have operations in the Netherlands and Portugal. When compared to Canada, it is cheaper to ship medical cannabis to Germany from the Netherlands and Portugal. From an economics standpoint, we expect operators to take advantage of the lower shipping expenses and focus production in markets that are located near Germany.
With a new administration coming into office in Germany, we can expect to see significant policy changes in the near future. We hope to see legislative reform that would legalize recreational cannabis in Germany and believe that our readers need to be aware of this market.
